The story of the temple began on October 4, 2008, when it was announced to the public. Fast forward to September 17, 2011, when the ground was broken in a special ceremony led by Apostle Henry B. Eyring. It was an exciting moment for many, as they looked forward to this sacred space being built.
After some time spent bringing the vision to life, the temple opened its doors for a spectacular open house from August 10 to September 6, 2016, drawing in more than 140,000 visitors who came to explore its beautiful interiors and learn more about its purpose. Just a few days later, on September 18, 2016, the temple was officially dedicated by Apostle Eyring, marking a joyful day for everyone involved.
Sitting on 1.6 acres, the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple features a lovely exterior made of white granite that beautifully blends with the surroundings. This special granite was quarried in Maine and crafted in Canada, giving it a unique touch. You’ll also notice two charming spires, topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue—what a sight!
Inside, the temple expands over 61,466 square feet, with designs inspired by the elegant American Georgian period. Each detail, from the flooring to the interior stone quarried in Egypt and shaped in Italy, has been thoughtfully selected. The brass lamps throughout the temple add a warm glow, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
For those wishing to participate in sacred ordinances, the temple includes two instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and a lovely baptistry, featuring a stylish railing made of bronze and glass panels. And don’t forget, there’s a handy distribution center right north of the temple that makes it easy for the community to access resources.
