Introducing the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple, the 196th dedicated temple in operation! Located at 2093 Powell Road in Cranberry Township, this magnificent temple is a proud addition for the Latter-day Saints community in the region.
The journey began with an inspiring announcement from Prophet Russell M. Nelson on April 5, 2020, sparking enthusiasm and anticipation among members. The groundbreaking ceremony on August 21, 2021, led by Elder Randall K. Bennett, was a powerful moment, as he encouraged all in attendance to make it a day of “emotional and spiritual building” for their lives and families.
Get ready for an incredible experience during the public open house from August 16 to August 31, 2024! This will be your chance to explore the temple’s stunning beauty before its official dedication on September 15, 2024, celebrated by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf. This dedication will mark a significant milestone for the community.
Spanning a generous 5.8 acres, the temple showcases an exceptional exterior finished with beautiful granite sourced from Portugal. Its striking architectural design features a prominent single attached central spire that adds to its grandeur, and it intentionally designs a space without the traditional gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue.
Inside the temple, you will find an impressive 32,240 square feet that includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a beautifully appointed baptistry—all meticulously designed to create a serene and sacred atmosphere. The thoughtfully chosen warm green-patterned carpet, coupled with soft gold accents and cozy nylon rugs in the entry and waiting areas, invites everyone to feel at home.
The interior, adorned with exquisite Crema Ella marble from Turkey, radiates elegance and tranquility. The celestial room captivates with its organic leaf pattern, providing a perfect setting for reflection and peace. Meanwhile, the sealing room and celestial room are enhanced by stunning crystal chandeliers, featuring frosted glass lighting paired with brass and crystal accents for a notable touch of sophistication.
As the second temple built in Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple serves an impressive 100,000 Latter-day Saints in the greater Pittsburgh area. The historical significance of this state cannot be overstated; it’s the birthplace of pivotal moments in church history, including where Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon and the miraculous restoration of the Aaronic Priesthood by John the Baptist to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery—a defining moment that involved their baptism in the Susquehanna River.
The rendering of the temple was unveiled on January 19, 2021, and since then, excitement has continued to build. The Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple stands as a beacon of hope and faith, representing the aspirations of a devoted community. We eagerly await the day we can come together to celebrate this striking new landmark and the uplifting spirit it brings to our lives!
