The journey to establish the San Antonio Texas Temple began with an essential announcement by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley on June 24, 2001, during a regional broadcast. The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on March 29, 2003, under the direction of H. Bruce Stucki.

A public open house ran from April 16 to May 7, 2005, drawing an impressive attendance of 69,679 individuals. The long-awaited dedication of the Temple took place on May 22, 2005, across four sessions, with a total of 14,069 attendees. During the dedicatory prayer, Gordon B. Hinckley expressed heartfelt sentiments invoking divine blessings upon the Temple.

Architectural Highlights

Occupying 5.5 acres, the San Antonio Texas Temple stands elegantly crafted from granite, showcasing a stunning blend of architectural features. Its single-story design includes a prominent spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. With a total area of 1,225 square feet and reaching an elevation of 1,225 feet, the Temple provides a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.

The Temple includes 2 instruction rooms, 2 sealing rooms, and one baptistry, thoughtfully designed for various purposes. Unique art pieces within the Temple integrate southwestern aesthetics with religious themes, featuring original murals by Keith Bond.

Interior Design and Lighting

Inside, the decor continues to impress with light fixtures made primarily of brass, art glass, faux alabaster, and crystals, creating an inviting atmosphere. The grand celestial and waiting rooms are adorned with elaborate fixtures, including a striking 700-pound chandelier.

The interior doors, crafted from cherry wood and complemented with bronze hardware, contribute to the overall elegance of the space. Custom railings around the baptismal font, made from wrought iron, reflect the regional Spanish colonial architectural style.

Unique Artistic Touches

The Temple showcases a stunning artistic fusion with elements unique to the area. The stained-glass windows include natural materials such as agate, fossilized red coral, and carbuncle, emphasizing local heritage. Notably, the Tree of Life windows in the Celestial Room beautifully portray themes of divine love and eternal life, often framed with intricate wheat motifs that represent peace and readiness.

On May 21, 2005, to commemorate the Temple’s dedication, a cultural celebration named “Heart of Texas Youth Jubilee” took place at the Alamodome, performed by local youth.

A Place of Significance

The San Antonio Texas Temple is the first of its kind in San Antonio and in Bexar County. It stands as the fourth Temple established in Texas, following those in Dallas (1984), Houston (2000), and Lubbock (2002). This Temple reflects a commitment to beauty, community, and spirituality, woven into the fabric of the local environment and culture.

As the San Antonio Texas Temple continues to serve its purpose, it remains a testament to the dedication and faith of its community and a shining example of artistic craftsmanship.
