Discovering the Birmingham Alabama Temple: A House of Worship with Rich History and Beauty
The Birmingham Alabama Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stands as a beacon of faith and community in the heart of Alabama. As the first temple in the state, it holds a special place in the hearts of many residents and church members alike.
A Landmark Announced and Built with Purpose
The journey to establish this sacred house began with its announcement on September 11, 1998. Following this, the site saw significant milestones: groundbreaking and site dedication took place on October 9, 1999, led by Stephen A. West. These moments marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Church in Alabama.
Open House and Dedication
In the summer of 2000, the Birmingham Alabama Temple opened its doors to the public for an open house from August 19th through the 26th. During this week, over 21,000 visitors toured the temple, gaining a glimpse into the sacred works that take place within its walls. The temple was dedicated by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley on September 3, 2000, officially establishing it as one of the 98 temples worldwide at that time.
A Beautiful and Symbolic Structure
Situated at 1927 Mount Olive Blvd in Gardendale, Alabama, the temple sits on a spacious 5.6-acre lot that shares its grounds with a charming chapel and parking facilities. Its exterior is truly stunning, featuring imperial Danby white marble quarried from Vermont, which lends it a luminous quality. The architectural design highlights a single attached spire topped with a striking gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, symbolizing the restoration of the gospel.
Inside the Temple
Spanning approximately 10,700 square feet and built at an elevation of 661 feet, the Birmingham Alabama Temple boasts two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry — all facilitating sacred ordinances and worship. During the winter months, a nativity scene is placed at the temple, adding to its festive and spiritual ambiance during the holiday season.

The temple’s meticulous design and stunning grounds have not gone unnoticed. The city of Gardendale awarded the Birmingham Alabama Temple a beautification award in recognition of its beautiful landscaping and overall aesthetic appeal.
