LDS Temple News Presents the Fresno California Temple House of the Lord Holiness to the Lord
On January 8, 1999, excitement filled the air with the announcement of the Fresno California Temple, setting the stage for a significant spiritual landmark in the Central Valley. Just a couple of months later, on March 20, 1999, the groundbreaking ceremony took place, presided over by Elder John B. Dickson. This ceremony was not just a formality; it marked the beginning of a cherished community resource that would grow to symbolize faith and family ties.
After the construction phase, the moment many had eagerly awaited arrived with the public open house, running from March 25 to April 4, 2000. Visitors flocked to experience the temple’s stunning architectural beauty, which features an exterior crafted from white Sierra granite harvested from the nearby Raymond quarry. With its striking single spire topped by the angel Moroni statue, the temple stands as a breathtaking sight against the backdrop of California’s vibrant landscape.
Spanning an impressive 10,850 square feet, the Fresno Temple is designed to serve as a sanctuary for personal reflection and family unity. Inside, it boasts two instruction rooms, a two-stage progressive room for learning, two elegant sealing rooms for sacred marriages, and a welcoming baptistry—all integral parts of the temple experience. Families can gather in the lovely picnic areas and lush green fields surrounding the temple, further enhancing the spirit of community and fellowship.
Located at 6290 North Valentine Avenue, the Fresno California Temple holds a special place in the history of the Church as its fourth temple in California and the first in the Central Valley. This milestone exemplifies California’s longstanding connection to the Church’s journey, which began with significant events dating back to the arrival of the ship Brooklyn in 1846 and the historic march of the Mormon Battalion.
Elder Dickson emphasized the importance of the day during the groundbreaking ceremony, stating, “From the days of the sailing of the ship Brooklyn to San Francisco Bay in 1846 and the forced march of the Mormon Battalion, California has taken a key role in the history of the Church. This is another of those great days.” His comments reflect not only the growth of the Church since its inception in April 1830 but also its expansive growth and impact on the world.
He also spoke passionately about the Book of Mormon, declaring, “What a blessing it is to have this other testimony of the Savior amidst the unbelief of the 20th and 21st centuries.” Elder Dickson’s words reminded attendees of their divine heritage, reinforcing that understanding God as their Heavenly Father and the role of families in His eternal plan is crucial.
The Fresno California Temple is more than just a building; it embodies the principles of love, family, and faith that bind communities together. As a haven for those seeking spiritual growth and connection, it invites everyone to explore the possibilities and joys of eternal family bonds. With every visit, the temple enriches lives and nourishes the soul, serving as a constant reminder of the sacred and everlasting nature of family unity.
