Great news coming from Zimbabwe! The Harare Zimbabwe Temple was officially announced on April 3, 2016, during the 186th Annual General Conference by none other than Prophet Thomas S. Monson. This announcement marked the beginning of a significant and transformative journey toward creating a vital place of Temple Work and community.
On December 12, 2020, we celebrated a pivotal moment with the groundbreaking ceremony led by Elder Edward Dube, a respected native and 1st Counselor in the African South Area Presidency. His powerful words, “As we watch the rising of this building from the ground up, may we also turn our hearts upward to Thee and Thy Son, our Savior Jesus Christ,” clearly resonated with all present. The ceremony was further dignified by the presence of President Mnangagwa, patrons strongly recognized the Church’s crucial role in national development and the well-being of our citizens. At the groundbreaking ceremony was President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, was also in attendance. President Mnangagwa praised the Church in his remarks, saying, “The contribution of the Church to national development and social well being of the citizenry cannot be overemphasized.”
Mark your calendars now! The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will hold its Public Open House from January 22 to February 7, 2026. This is an exceptional opportunity for everyone to explore this remarkable addition to our community! Positioned at 65 Enterprise Road, Highlands, Harare, this beautifulcent temple will cover 6.7 acres and rise to an impressive height of 103 feet 4 inches, featuring a single attached end spire — although it will not include a gold-leafed Angel Moroni. Inside, the temple will boast two Instruction Rooms, two Sealing Rooms, and one baptistry, making for a spacious 17,247 square feet of sacred space.
On October 1, 2020, we received a stunning rendering of the temple, stirring excitement throughout the community. The significance of this temple cannot be overstated; it will greatly alleviate the travel burden, as many members no longer need to journey 13 hours to the Johannesburg South African Temple. As the first temple in our beautiful Zimbabwe and the eighth temple in Africa, the Harare Zimbabwe Temple will serve as a monumental achievement for our local congregation, which proudly includes around 26,000 members, six stakes, and two districts.
Additionally, we were honored to host Prophet Russell M. Nelson at the temple site on April 17, 2018, during his inspiring tour. His visit left a lasting impression and heightened our anticipation for this momentous Temple. The Harare Zimbabwe Temple will stand as a beacon of hope, connection, and spiritual growth for our community.
