Denver Colorado Temple: A Historical Overview
Nestled in a serene neighborhood at 2001 E Phillips Cir, Centennial, Colorado 80122, the Denver Colorado Temple stands as the 40th dedicated Temple in operation, a significant addition to the spiritual landscape of the area. Announced on March 31, 1982, the Temple represents years of dedication and commitment from its supporters in Colorado.
The journey to its completion began with a groundbreaking ceremony held on May 19, 1984, led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. This marked the start of a process that would culminate in a beautiful space for reflection and learning.
After an extensive period of construction, the public had the opportunity to explore the Temple from September 8 to September 27, 1986. During this time, an impressive 140,000 people took the opportunity to learn about its significance and architecture.
The official dedication of the Denver Colorado Temple occurred from October 24 to October 28, 1986, conducted by Prophet Ezra Taft Benson. This momentous occasion drew over 28,000 members who gathered to celebrate this new addition to their lives.
Occupying 7.5 acres, the building features 29,117 square feet of thoughtfully designed interior space. The exterior boasts precast stone walls and a built-up roof, combining aesthetic beauty with structural integrity. At a height of 90 feet and sitting at an elevation of 5,728 feet, the Temple offers a striking presence against the Colorado skyline.
A standout feature is the single attached end spire, which is topped by a gold-leafed statue of the Angel Moroni. This figure not only adds a striking visual element but also holds significance for many who engage with the rich teachings associated with it.
Inside the building, there are four instruction rooms and five sealing rooms, along with one baptistry, designed to facilitate various rites and educational experiences integral to the faith.
Before construction began, members of the local area proactively collected funds in anticipation of the Temple’s establishment, showcasing their commitment to this important initiative. The cornerstone ceremony further solidified its significance when Prophet Ezra Taft Benson remarked that it would be “a beacon to members and nonmembers alike… a constant, visible sign that God has not left man to grope in darkness.”
