A Journey Through Time
The journey towards the completion of the Draper Utah Temple began on October 2, 2004, when it was officially announced. Following this announcement, the community eagerly anticipated the groundbreaking and site dedication, which took place on August 5, 2006, led by the esteemed Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Reflecting on the occasion, he expressed profound appreciation for the faithful attendees, stating, “It is a great tribute to our people.”
The anticipation culminated in a public open house held from January 15 to March 14, 2009. During this time, an impressive 684,721 guests explored the interior and appreciated the meticulously designed surroundings.
Architectural Splendor
The architectural features of the Draper Utah Temple are nothing short of extraordinary. The exterior, adorned with white granite from China, reflects elegance, while the structure’s height reaches an impressive 166 feet, set against an elevation of 5,136 feet. At the pinnacle, the gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue was installed on July 8, 2008, further enhancing its visual allure.
Covering 58,300 square feet, the Draper Utah Temple is thoughtfully designed to include four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and a designated baptistry. Incorporating makore wood from Africa, the interior crafts a warm and inviting atmosphere, seamlessly blending natural beauty with functional spaces.
A Tribute to Nature
One cannot overlook the thematic inspiration drawn from the sego lily, Utah’s state flower, which is woven throughout the design. Additionally, the temple features 221 exterior windows and 50 interior windows, beautifully displaying the Log Cabin quilt pattern that pays homage to the state’s pioneering heritage.
The baptistry is particularly notable for its strategic location on the downhill western side, allowing for abundant natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows. The largest sealing room can accommodate up to 80 patrons, ensuring ample space for meaningful ceremonies.
Completion and Dedication
The dedication of the Draper Utah Temple spanned from March 20 to 22, 2009, officiated by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. Marking a significant milestone, this event solidified the temple’s role in the lives of those who cherish its teachings and the spiritual growth it fosters.
