Interestingly, the initial plan was for the temple to be constructed of logs, but it was ultimately finished with sandstone stuccoed with plaster, giving it a distinctive appearance. The total size of the temple encompasses approximately 15,000 square feet, making it a sizable and impressive structure for its time.

The dedication of the Kirtland Temple was marked by extraordinary spiritual phenomena. Those present witnessed visions, prophecies, and divine manifestations. Prophet Joseph Smith described the sacred experience:
“Brother George A. Smith arose and began to prophesy, when a noise was heard like the sound of a rushing mighty wind, which filled the Temple, and all the congregation simultaneously rose, being moved upon by an invisible power; many began to speak in tongues and prophesy; others saw glorious visions; and I beheld the Temple was filled with angels, which fact I declared to the congregation.”
On April 3, 1836 — during the Jewish Passover — the Lord appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery within the temple, reaffirming His acceptance of the house. This event also marked the restoration of key priesthood keys through ancient prophets: Moses (gathering of Israel), Elias (dispensation of the gospel of Abraham), and Elijah (sealing keys).
The Sacred Ordinances and Later Use
While early ordinances received in Kirtland were only partial, the temple served as a vital spiritual center. The full endowment was not administered until the Saints settled in Nauvoo, Illinois. After just a couple of years following its dedication, many Saints left Kirtland, and the temple transitioned into a dual purpose: worship space and public venue. For many years, it was leased and used as a public school.
Preservation and Restoration
In 1880, the Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) reacquired ownership of the Kirtland Temple and undertook restoration efforts to preserve its historical integrity. They worked diligently to restore the building to its original condition, maintaining the sacred connection for over a century.
Most recently, on March 5, 2024, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints purchased the Kirtland Temple. It reopened to the public for tours on March 25, 2024, allowing visitors from all faiths and backgrounds to experience its spiritual ambiance and historical significance firsthand.
