The announcement of the Meridian Idaho Temple was made by Prophet Thomas S. Monson on April 2, 2011, during the 181st General Conference. At that time, Meridian was rapidly growing, experiencing a remarkable 115 percent population increase from 2000 to 2010. The growth in Meridian sparked the organization of three additional stakes within the city, along with four more in nearby areas, underscoring the increasing need for a dedicated space. Situated about 11 miles west of Boise—the state capital and largest city—this Temple holds a significant place in the region.
The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on August 23, 2014, presided over by Apostle David A. Bednar, accompanied by notable civic leaders including Meridian Mayor Tammy deWeerd and Eagle Mayor James Reynolds. In his remarks, Elder Bednar expressed hope for the Temple to become a beacon of light and gratitude for many years to come.
A public open house ran from October 21 to November 11, 2017, drawing over 200,000 attendees eager to explore its interiors before the dedication. The Temple was officially dedicated on November 19, 2017, by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf in three distinct sessions. His dedicatory prayer emphasized the sanctity of the space, asking for blessings on those who would enter it.
Architectural Features
Covering 67,331 square feet and rising to a height of 120.2 feet, the Meridian Idaho Temple is a three-story building expertly situated on 15.73 acres. The exterior features a precast concrete finish with an octagonal dome and a single attached central tower, topped by a striking 13-foot-6-inch statue of the angel Moroni—a prominent feature hoisted into place on July 20, 2016. The exterior art glass incorporates geometric, Art Deco-inspired designs that feature blossoming lily-like flowers, symbolizing growth and beauty.
Interior Design Elements
The interior of the Meridian Idaho Temple is thoughtfully crafted, showcasing elegance through various design elements. The Celestial Room is adorned with multi-tiered crystal and bronze chandeliers casting a warm amber glow, complemented by luxurious materials like Egyptian, Italian, and Spanish marble. The interior doors are fashioned from Sapele African mahogany, which is both durable and beautifully finished with floral accents that celebrate Idaho’s native flora.

In a vibrant display of local spirit, nearly 6,000 youth participated in a cultural celebration, “Be Strong, Steadfast, and Immovable,” at the Taco Bell Arena on the Boise State University campus just a day before the Temple’s dedication. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf lauded the potential of these young individuals as the future of the community, emphasizing the importance of faith and resilience.

It is the first Temple built in Meridian and the second in Ada County, following the Boise Idaho Temple. The Meridian Idaho Temple is also the fifth Temple constructed in the state of Idaho, preceded by the Idaho Falls, Boise, Rexburg, and Twin Falls Temples.
