Announced on April 1, 2018, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during the 1888th annual General Conference, the Richmond Virginia Temple marks a notable development in the region. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on April 11, 2020, led by Randall K. Bennett, setting the stage for this remarkable structure.
A public open house was held from March 25 through April 15, 2023, allowing individuals to explore this beautiful new addition. On May 7, 2023, the Temple was formally dedicated by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks, culminating a journey of faith and community support.
Architectural Features
The Richmond Virginia Temple stands at an impressive height of 164 feet and spans 39,202 square feet, designed to blend harmoniously with its surroundings. At an elevation of 280 feet, its prominent silhouette commands attention. The exterior finish features Moleanos limestone from Portugal, providing a classic aesthetic.
Unique Design Elements
One of the standout architectural features is the single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni, a recognizable figure in many Temples. The stained glass windows, designed with blue, gold, and red hues, draw inspiration from an early American color palette.
