The journey began on June 13, 1998, with a momentous groundbreaking ceremony led by Lynn A. Mickelsen. After nearly two years of construction and anticipation, the temple opened its doors to the public for an open house from August 5 to 22, 2000. Visitors experienced the temple’s breathtaking beauty, culminating in an unforgettable dedication ceremony over the weekend of August 26-27, 2000, led by the beloved Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Finished in elegant Luna Pearl Granite, the temple reaches an impressive height of 159 feet, standing tall and majestic against the Houston skyline. Inside its spacious 33,970 square feet, visitors find two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry, each a vital part of the temple’s sacred offerings.
In a notable reaffirmation of its significance, the temple was rededicated in April 2018 by M. Russell Ballard. This event highlighted its continued importance to the community, particularly for the twenty-eight stakes in the Houston area that now have access to a house of worship, which previously required a five-hour journey to reach the nearest temple in Dallas.

Years later, upon learning of the Church’s intention to build a temple, he experienced a transformative change of heart, viewing this as his chance to honor his earlier commitment.
Mr. Hand’s vision for the land started with the purchase of 2,000 acres, where he envisioned a future full of potential. Although the property was on the market when President Hinckley visited, the idea of its sale for a temple seemed distant. Through persistent discussions on the intended use of the land, Mr. Hand came to see his decision as a fulfillment of a promise, forever altering the spiritual landscape of Houston.
