The journey began with a groundbreaking ceremony on June 13, 1998, led by Lynn A. Mickelsen. After nearly two years of dedicated work and anticipation, the doors of the Houston Texas Temple opened to the public between August 5 and 22, 2000, during a much-anticipated open house. Visitors marveled at the beautiful interiors and peaceful surroundings, culminating in a momentous dedication ceremony over the weekend of August 26-27, 2000, officiated by the late President Gordon B. Hinckley. This sacred event drew members from across the region, all united in their desire to deepen their faith in a space designed for reflection and worship.
The temple itself, built on an impressive 11 acres, is a stunning example of design and craftsmanship. Rising majestically to 159 feet, it features a single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed angel Moroni, symbolizing the Church’s dedication to sharing the gospel. The exterior, finished in elegant Luna Pearl Granite, makes a striking addition to the Houston skyline. Inside, visitors find two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all within a spacious 33,970 square feet, inviting reflection and reverence.
In April 2018, the temple was rededicated by M. Russell Ballard, reaffirming its importance to the community. It serves twenty-eight stakes in the Houston area, bringing countless blessings to members who had previously faced long travels—up to five hours—to reach the nearest temple in Dallas.

His initial vision for the area, which began with the purchase of 2,000 acres, found its realization in the temple’s establishment—an event that fundamentally transformed the spiritual landscape of Houston.
