LDS Temple News Presents the Houston Texas Temple

Nestled in the heart of Houston, the Houston Texas Temple stands as a monumental testament to faith, resilience, and community spirit. Announced on September 30, 1997, this sacred edifice has grown to become a cherished spiritual landmark for many, symbolizing not just architectural grandeur but also a profound commitment to shared beliefs and values.

The journey began with a groundbreaking ceremony on June 13, 1998, led by Lynn A. Mickelsen. This pivotal moment signaled the start of an incredible journey for the local community, whose members eagerly anticipated the addition of a temple that would serve as a focal point for their worship and spiritual growth.

After nearly two years of dedicated work and anticipation, the doors of the Houston Texas Temple opened to the public between August 5 and 22, 2000, during a much-anticipated open house. Visitors marveled at the beautiful interiors and peaceful surroundings, culminating in a momentous dedication ceremony over the weekend of August 26-27, 2000, officiated by the late President Gordon B. Hinckley. This sacred event drew members from across the region, all united in their desire to deepen their faith in a space designed for reflection and worship.

The temple itself, built on an impressive 11 acres, is a stunning example of design and craftsmanship. Rising majestically to 159 feet, it features a single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed angel Moroni, symbolizing the Church’s dedication to sharing the gospel. The exterior, finished in elegant Luna Pearl Granite, makes a striking addition to the Houston skyline. Inside, visitors find two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all within a spacious 33,970 square feet, inviting reflection and reverence.

In April 2018, the temple was rededicated by M. Russell Ballard, reaffirming its importance to the community. It serves twenty-eight stakes in the Houston area, bringing countless blessings to members who had previously faced long travels—up to five hours—to reach the nearest temple in Dallas.

Reflecting on the temple’s groundbreaking, Elder Christofferson spoke powerfully about humility and personal growth, urging attendees to ponder the changes they might embrace to draw closer to the divine. His profound question, “What will make each of us more holy as we enter the temple doors?” continues to resonate with individuals seeking to enrich their spiritual lives.

A pivotal figure in the temple’s history is Don Hand, the former landowner of the site. Faced with financial challenges in the mid-1980s, Hand turned to prayer, seeking divine direction during a difficult time. Years later, when he learned of the Church’s intent to build a temple on his property, he saw an opportunity to fulfill a long-held promise to the Lord. His initial vision for the area, which began with the purchase of 2,000 acres, found its realization in the temple’s establishment—an event that fundamentally transformed the spiritual landscape of Houston.

Today, the Houston Texas Temple stands as more than just a building; it is a sanctuary for spiritual growth and community connection. It draws members from across the region, offering a space for reflection, worship, and communion with the divine. The story of its construction is a powerful narrative of faith, sacrifice, and the miraculous guidance that can lead to extraordinary outcomes, reminding all who enter its doors of the beauty that can arise from steadfast belief and communal effort.
