LDS Temple News Presents the Lubbock Texas Temple

Welcome to the Lubbock Texas Temple, a commanding presence and the 109th dedicated temple in operation. Announced on April 2, 2000, this iconic structure sparked immediate enthusiasm and set the stage for a transformative spiritual experience for families in the region. On November 4, 2000, Elder Rex D. Pinegar presided over the groundbreaking ceremony, officially launching this monumental project that stands as a beacon of faith.

The public open house, held from March 23rd to March 30th, 2002, welcomed countless visitors to explore the temple before its dedication on April 21, 2002, by the esteemed Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Occupying 2.7 acres, the temple’s impressive Empress white and majestic gray granite, skillfully quarried in China, asserts its architectural grandeur and significance.

A distinctive single spire, capped with the angel Moroni statue, declares a message of hope and divine guidance. Inside, the temple is meticulously designed, featuring two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all contributing to a generous total of 16,498 square feet. Elevated at 3,293 feet, this sacred space rises prominently, embodying its importance to the community.

Elder Pinegar’s powerful words at the groundbreaking continue to resonate: “A family gathers to see and be part of the beginning of the family home… this temple is the symbol of our heavenly home.” These words reflect the deep significance of this sacred space—a haven for love and spiritual connection. First President Jay B. Jensen captured the overwhelming joy of local members, describing their reaction as dreamlike, even in the face of the rain gracing the groundbreaking.

Strategically located next to the Lubbock Texas Stake Center on Frankford Avenue, the temple invites exploration of its grounds, where rich symbolism thrives in the exquisite stained glass and intricately etched granite walls. Every detail conveys a powerful message of faith, resilience, and community, positioning the Lubbock Texas Temple as far more than a mere building—it is a revered sanctuary that opens its doors to all seeking peace, purpose, and belonging. Experience the formidable spirit of this remarkable temple—truly a home for the heart and soul.
