The journey of the Lubbock Texas Temple began when it was announced to the public on April 2, 2000, during General Conference. Groundbreaking and site dedication occurred shortly thereafter on November 4, 2000, with Elder Rex D. Pinegar presiding over the event. He emphasized the importance of this venue, describing it as a place to experience love and belonging. Elder Pinegar expressed that it would serve as a heavenly home, where individuals can seek blessings and perform essential service.
A public open house took place from March 23 to March 30, 2002, allowing many to explore the newly completed Temple. The dedication ceremony was held on April 21, 2002, led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who remarked, “This building will serve the Lord and the people of this area.”
Architectural and Artistic Features
The Lubbock Texas Temple is nestled on 2.7 acres and spans 16,498 square feet. Its exterior is beautifully adorned with Empress white and majestic gray granite, skillfully quarried in China. Towering above, a single attached end spire is crowned by a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue, adding a striking touch to the overall design.
Artwork and Interior Design
Inside, the Temple features a variety of artistic elements. The tall arched windows are crafted from elegant stained glass, capturing light and radiating it outward in symbolic rays from a central sun. This design harmonizes perfectly with the building’s light-colored granite exterior.
The interior showcases a blend of original oil paintings and watercolor-style prints that depict scenes from the life of Christ along with elements of the local West Texas landscape. Many artworks celebrate the local flora, including the beautiful bluebonnet, set against soft pastel skies.
Elegant Fixtures and Doors
The interior light fixtures include stunning crystal chandeliers and sconces that artfully combine crystal, bronze, and acrylic elements. The doors within the Temple are predominantly made of light-colored wood, complementing the warm interior design. Many feature intricate hand-carved floral and wheat motifs, symbolizing the “bread of life.”
The exterior entrance doors, made of rich, heavy dark wood, are adorned with traditional paneling and polished brass hardware, blending seamlessly into the Temple’s elegant design ideals.
Significance in Texas
The Lubbock Texas Temple holds the distinction of being the first Temple built in Lubbock and the first in Lubbock County. It is also the third Temple constructed in the state of Texas, following the Dallas Texas Temple in 1984 and the Houston Texas Temple in 2000. Notably, the groundbreaking for this Temple coincided with that of the Monterrey Mexico Temple, showcasing a simultaneous expansion of faith in multiple regions.
