LDS Temple News Presents the Meridian Idaho Temple

The announcement of the Meridian Idaho Temple occurred during the 181st General Conference on April 2, 2011, by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson. This announcement came at a time when Meridian experienced rapid population growth, with a 115 percent increase from 2000 to 2010. During this period, the area saw the formation of three additional stakes, while surrounding communities such as Nampa, Kuna, and Middleton also organized more stakes to accommodate the growing populace. Situated approximately 11 miles west of Boise, the largest city in Idaho, Meridian was recognized as the state’s third largest and fastest-growing city.

Groundbreaking and Dedication

The groundbreaking for the Meridian Idaho Temple took place on August 23, 2014, with Apostle David A. Bednar presiding over the event. Distinguished community leaders, including Meridian Mayor Tammy deWeerd and Eagle Mayor James Reynolds, were also in attendance. Elder Bednar’s address focused on gratitude, emphasizing the enduring impact the Temple would have on those who engage with it.

The public open house ran from October 21 to November 11, 2017, attracting over 200,000 attendees. On November 19, 2017, Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf dedicated the Temple in three sessions. His dedicatory prayer emphasized the importance of sacred covenants and the joy found in service.

Architectural Features and Design

Covering 15.73 acres, the Meridian Idaho Temple boasts a modern classical architectural style with a striking design. The exterior is finished with precast concrete and features geometric Art Deco-inspired patterns in its art glass, which incorporates symbols of local flora, including the syringa, Idaho’s state flower.

The Temple spans 67,331 square feet, standing at an impressive height of 120.2 feet. This three-story Temple includes three instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The interior showcases stunning light fixtures, such as multi-tiered crystal and bronze chandeliers that complement elegant marbles and rich wood finishes throughout.

Inside the Temple

The Celestial Room and other significant areas within the Temple exhibit exquisite design choices. Interior doors made of African mahogany are complemented by decorative metal hardware featuring floral motifs, while the baptistry’s railing is crafted from warm wood and evokes the natural beauty of Idaho.

The exterior also features artistic elements, including durable metal and artistic glass designs that reflect both beauty and resilience. The cupola at the top, made from titanium surfacing, intriguingly changes colors based on the sunlight, showcasing striking hues from blue-gray to gold and bronze.

Celebrating Community Spirit

The cultural celebration surrounding the Temple’s dedication was a landmark event, with nearly 6,000 youth from 16 local stakes participating in a musical gathering titled “Be Strong, Steadfast, and Immovable.” Held at Taco Bell Arena on the Boise State University campus, the celebration highlighted the importance of youth in shaping the future of the community.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf underscored the significance of these young individuals, stating that they represent a treasure of faith and potential. His heartfelt message emphasized the vital role they play in their families and the wider community, positioning them as the future leaders of Idaho.

In summary, the Meridian Idaho Temple is not just an architectural achievement; it is a reflection of the growth, faith, and dedication of its local populace. Through its striking design, spiritual significance, and vibrant community engagement, the Temple serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration in Idaho.
