The Oakland California Temple, located at 4770 Lincoln Ave, Oakland, California, 94602, is a striking architectural and spiritual landmark. Its history dates back to January 23, 1961, when the temple was first announced, marking a significant moment for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the region.
The groundbreaking ceremony, which signified the official start of construction, took place on May 26, 1962. This important event was presided over by Prophet David O. McKay, who played a pivotal role in the temple’s development. Following years of anticipation, the temple’s first public open house was held from October 5 to October 31, 1964, allowing the community to experience the temple’s beauty before its dedication.
The dedication of the Oakland California Temple occurred in multiple sessions from November 17 to November 19, 1964, also under the leadership of Prophet David O. McKay. This ceremony marked the temple’s official consecration for sacred purposes. Fast forward to recent years, the temple experienced its third public open house from May 11 to June 1, 2019, followed by a significant rededication ceremony on June 16, 2019, led by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks. This rededication was particularly special as it allowed for updates and improvements to the temple, ensuring it continues to serve as a spiritual haven for many.
Covering an expansive 18.1 acres, the Oakland California Temple is not only a site for worship but also a beautiful place for reflection and peace. Its construction was inspired by a spontaneous vision from Elder George Albert Smith in April 1928. While meeting with the San Francisco stake president at the Fairmont Hotel atop Nob Hill, he envisioned a magnificent white temple on the East Bay hills. His powerful words, describing the temple as “an ensign to the nations,” reflected a profound hope for the future of sacred spaces in the area.
Architecturally, the Oakland California Temple showcases a striking exterior finish of reinforced concrete combined with Sierra white granite sourced from Raymond, California. The design is characterized by a central spire rising majestically, complemented by four smaller spires that accentuate its silhouette. In line with a prophetic vision shared by Brigham Young, the temple provides views that extend to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, fulfilling a long-held aspiration.
The temple measures 80,157 square feet and stands 170 feet tall, situated at an elevation of 664 feet overlooking the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. Among its many features are cascading waterfalls and a creek-style water feature, creating a serene environment that invites contemplation and worship.
Inside the temple, there are four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, designed to accommodate various sacred ordinances and family gatherings. Notably, the Oakland California Temple was the first in the United States specifically designed for film presentations in its instruction rooms, enhancing the learning experience for guests.
Artistic elements are also prominent, with two 35-foot sculpted panels depicting Jesus Christ teaching, further emphasizing the significance of faith and learning within its walls. Initially known as the Oakland Temple, this building was the second temple constructed in California and continues to serve as a vital center for worship and community within the Latter-day Saints across the region and beyond.
