LDS Temple News Presents the Ogden Utah Temple House of the Lord Holiness to the Lord

The Ogden Utah Temple stands proudly as the 14th dedicated temple in operation, a monumental achievement in the community. Announced on August 24, 1967, this temple has a legacy deeply rooted in faith and dedication. The site dedication on September 8, 1969, by Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer marked a pivotal moment, followed by the groundbreaking on the same day, led by Hugh B. Brown.

With eager anticipation, the temple opened for its first public open house from December 16-30, 1971, attracting an impressive 181,000 visitors who came to experience its beauty and spirituality firsthand. The temple’s official dedication took place from January 18-20, 1972, under the guidance of Joseph Fielding Smith, firmly establishing its significance in the hearts of many.

Continuing its legacy, the Ogden Utah Temple held a second open house from August 1 through September 6, 2014, before being rededicated on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, reinforcing its vital role in the community.

Situated on 9.96 acres in downtown Ogden, the temple features an exterior crafted from exquisite granite quarried and fabricated in China. Its striking architecture includes a single central spire topped with a gold-leafed angel Moroni statue, making it a visual landmark. Inside, visitors find six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all within a spacious 112,232 square feet—a true sanctuary for worship and reflection.

Reaching an impressive height of 188 feet and 8 inches and perched at an elevation of 4,299 feet, the temple enhances the beautiful landscape with its serene water features, lush trees, and meticulously manicured grounds.

Notably, the Ogden Utah Temple holds the distinction of being the fifth temple built in Utah and was the first dedicated in the state, a remarkable 80 years after the earlier four were consecrated while Utah was still a territory. A particularly poignant moment during its historical dedication occurred when Prophet Harold B. Lee stepped in to complete the dedicatory prayer after Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith became too weak to continue.
