Welcome to the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple! Nestled at 11022 S 4000 W in South Jordan, Utah, this stunning temple is not just an architectural gem but also holds a heartwarming story that began with its announcement on October 1, 2005.
After much anticipation, the temple’s groundbreaking took place on December 16, 2006, thanks to the beloved Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Fast forward a bit, and from June 1 to August 1 in 2009, the community was invited to explore this beautiful building during its very first public open house—what an exciting time that must have been!
The official dedication followed shortly after, from August 21 to 23, 2009, led by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson. Fun fact: this temple sits on 11 acres of land and boasts a stunning exterior made of Uinta Gold Granite from China. Plus, the pavers are Wyndam Grey Granite from the Qingdao area of Northern China, giving it a classy touch!
One of the standout features is the single attached end spire topped with a golden angel Moroni statue, which brings a sense of peace and beauty to the skyline. Standing at 60,000 square feet, and towering at 183 feet, it’s the thirteenth temple built in Utah and proudly sits at an elevation of 4,783 feet. It’s also the fourth temple in the Salt Lake Valley, right alongside the South Jordan Utah Temple.
In a surprising twist during that very first open house, lightning struck the angel Moroni statue on June 13, 2009, leaving its trumpet, arm, and face a bit charred. But don’t worry! A brand new replacement statue was installed on August 11, just ten days before the official dedication.
Inside, the temple features a warm, inviting atmosphere with beautiful light limestone from Morocco and darker limestone from Egypt. The woodwork is crafted from Rift-cut White Oak solids from Indiana and Kentucky, while the doors and veneers elegantly showcase White Oak and Sycamore from the German Alps.
And let’s not forget the sparkling chandeliers, especially the magnificent 15-foot tall one in the Celestial Room that sparkles with 19,447 individual Swarovski crystals—it’s simply breathtaking! The bronzed door handrails are made right here in the USA, adding to the local charm, and the lovely murals throughout were painted by dedicated church service missionaries, each one telling its own story.
