Welcome to the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple, a true gem nestled at 11022 S 4000 W in South Jordan, Utah! This stunning temple has a wonderful story, starting with its announcement on October 1, 2005, and the exciting groundbreaking on December 16, 2006, led by the beloved Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.
After much anticipation, the temple opened its doors for the first time from June 1 to August 1, 2009, welcoming visitors to marvel at its beauty. The dedication ceremonies that followed from August 21 to 23, 2009, officiated by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, were filled with joy and meaning for everyone involved.
Set on 11 picturesque acres, the temple features a striking exterior made of Uinta Gold Granite from China, beautifully complemented by pavers crafted from Wyndam Grey Granite from the Qingdao area. One of the standout features is the single spire topped with a gorgeous gold leafed angel Moroni statue, which truly captures the eye.
Measuring 60,000 square feet and standing 183 feet tall, the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple sits at an elevation of 4,783 feet! It’s the thirteenth temple built in Utah and holds a special place as the fourth temple in the Salt Lake Valley, right alongside the South Jordan Utah Temple.
An interesting piece of history: on June 13, 2009, during the public open house, lightning struck the lovely angel Moroni statue! It left its mark, but don’t worry—a new statue was installed just ten days before the dedicatory services, ensuring that the temple looked its best for the big day.
Inside, you’ll find beautiful light limestone from Morocco and darker limestone from Egypt, paired with stunning woodwork made from Rift-cut White Oak from Indiana and Kentucky. The chandeliers are absolutely breathtaking, especially the one in the Celestial Room, which is a towering 15 feet high and adorned with 19,447 sparkling Swarovski crystals!
As you explore the temple, you can appreciate the lovely bronzed door handrails made right here in the USA and the charming murals created by church service missionaries, each telling their own special story.
The Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple isn’t just a beautiful structure—it’s a place of peace, faith, and community. We invite you to come and soak in the tranquility and warmth this incredible temple has to offer. You might just leave feeling uplifted and inspired!
