The Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple is such a beautiful and welcoming place! As the 152nd dedicated temple in operation, it stands proudly at 1739 Vine St in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The journey to this stunning temple began on October 4, 2008, when it was first announced. Fast forward a few years to September 17, 2011, and you can picture the excitement as Apostle Henry B. Eyring presided over the groundbreaking and site dedication. It was a day filled with hope and anticipation for everyone involved!
After a lot of hard work and dedication, the temple opened its doors for a public open house from August 10 to September 6, 2016. Over 140,000 people came to explore and experience the beauty of the temple. Just imagine the joy of those who visited! The official dedication ceremony took place on September 18, 2016, with Apostle Eyring again leading the charge, making it a truly memorable event.
This lovely temple is nestled on 1.6 acres and showcases a stunning exterior finish of white granite. It blends beautifully with the surrounding buildings and was sourced from Maine and crafted in Canada—talk about a unique touch! The design features two end spires topped with a gleaming gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, making it a noteworthy landmark that community members cherish.
Inside, the temple is spacious, boasting 61,466 square feet filled with serenity and beauty. The interior decor is inspired by the American Georgian period, with lovely flooring materials that fit right in. The stone used inside was quarried in Egypt and crafted in Italy, giving the temple a touch of international charm. Plus, you’ll notice beautiful brass lamps throughout that add a warm, inviting glow to the space.
For those looking to participate in sacred ordinances, the temple includes two instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and a tranquil baptistry, complete with elegant bronze railings and glass panels. How lovely is that? And to top it all off, there’s a distribution building conveniently located just north of the temple for easy access.
