Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple

LDS Temple News Presents the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple

Let’s take a friendly stroll through the story of the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple, shall we? This beautiful temple, the 196th of its kind, opened its doors with excitement and joy in the hearts of many! It’s located at 2093 Powell Road in lovely Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, and it’s making quite a splash in the local community.

The journey began on April 5, 2020, when our beloved Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced the plans for the temple. That announcement sparked a wave of enthusiasm, and the groundwork was officially laid on August 21, 2021, during a heartfelt ceremony led by Elder Randall K. Bennett. He reminded everyone that this day should also be one of emotional and spiritual building in our own lives and families—a beautiful thought to carry with us!

Fast forward to the upcoming public open house from August 16 to August 31, 2024! It’s a fantastic opportunity for everyone to explore the temple’s wonderful features before its dedication on September 15, 2024, by the one and only Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf. Mark your calendars!

This temple spans an impressive 5.8 acres and boasts a stunning exterior clad in granite from Portugal. Its unique design showcases a single attached central spire, which gives it a lovely silhouette that stands out in the area. While it doesn’t have the traditional gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, its beauty speaks for itself.

With 32,240 square feet of sacred space, the interior of the temple is just as inviting! There are two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry that collectively create a haven for Temple work and reflection. The charming green patterned carpeting, accented with soft gold, brightens up the space, while nylon rugs greet you warmly in the entry and waiting areas. And let’s not forget the gorgeous Crema Ella marble from Turkey that adds a touch of elegance throughout!

One of the highlights is the celestial room, featuring a lovely organic leaf pattern that encourages peace and contemplation. The sealing room and celestial room are adorned with beautiful crystal chandeliers that create a warm and serene atmosphere. The frosted glass lighting, with brass and crystal accents, is simply stunning.

Fun fact: the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple is the second temple built in Pennsylvania, serving approximately 100,000 Latter-day Saints in and around Pittsburgh! The history of this state is truly rich, with significant events like Joseph Smith translating the Book of Mormon in Oakland Township, and the appearance of John the Baptist to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, who restored the Aaronic Priesthood nearby.

The rendering of the temple was revealed on January 19, 2021, celebrating the vision of what this remarkable place would become. It’s more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a symbol of faith, love, and community coming together.

As we look forward to the opening, the excitement is palpable! This temple is sure to be a cherished refuge for many, fostering a spirit of unity, hope, and renewal. We can’t wait to see the community come together in this beautiful new space!
