After shutting its doors on January 1, 2020, for seismic upgrades and extensive renovations, the Salt Lake Temple is set to reopen to the public from April 5, 2027, through October 1, 2027. This period marks the first time in over 130 years that the temple will open its doors for public tours. The church anticipates an astonishing turnout during this time, estimating that between 3 million and 5 million individuals will participate in this celebration, with daily attendance projected at approximately 20,000 to 29,000.
Managing Anticipated Crowds
Both the city and the Church of Jesus Christ are collaborating on logistical plans to handle the expected influx of visitors. The upcoming open house is expected to be the largest the church has ever organized, surpassing previous events. By comparison, the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 saw around 70,000 visitors a day for just 17 days, highlighting the scale of the upcoming event.
Transportation and Tickets
The Church plans to make travel convenient for the public during the open house. In late August or early September, an app will be launched for visitors to reserve times for tours. Arrangements with UTA will allow ticket holders to access public transportation options, including TRAX, FrontRunner, and buses, to ease downtown traffic. Additionally, a secure park-and-ride lot will be established, featuring regular shuttle services to the House of the Lord.
Tour Details
The tour experience will begin at the church’s Conference Center, located just north of Temple Square, and will lead visitors underground to the temple itself. Each tour is expected to last between 60 and 80 minutes, made more informative by the presence of special missionaries serving as guides. Once within the perimeter, attendees will have access to Temple Square and its newly added elements and buildings, ensuring a fulfilling experience that could last several hours.
Community Engagement
In preparation for the open house, church employees will receive complimentary UTA passes to aid in alleviating potential traffic congestion in the area. Furthermore, the church will offer tours to local businesses and residents in March 2027, allowing the surrounding community to engage with the House of the Lord before the general public.
