The announcement for the temple came on April 1, 2018, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during the 188th annual General Conference. Following this announcement, the groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on April 11, 2020, led by Randall K. Bennett.
The temple opened its doors to the public from March 25 through April 15, 2023, allowing visitors to appreciate its design and spiritual ambiance before the official dedication. Architecturally, the temple features exterior finishes made from elegant Moleanos limestone sourced from Portugal. Its design includes a single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni, which measures 164 feet in height, while the temple itself covers 39,202 square feet and is situated at an elevation of 280 feet.
Inside, the Richmond Virginia Temple is designed for various sacred functions, featuring four instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The interior decor includes a royal navy-blue carpet with a distinct octagonal pattern, referencing classic Jeffersonian architectural elements. The flooring consists of a combination of carpet and marble stone in a diamond parquet layout, enhancing the temple’s elegant atmosphere.
The stained glass windows are a notable feature, utilizing blue, gold, and red glass that draws from an early American color palette, with designs incorporating diamond motifs reflective of members styles. This approach also aligns with the simple divided light characteristic of historic colonial buildings in Virginia.
Additionally, the landscaping around the temple includes carefully selected plants that complement the colonial atmosphere, further enriching the peaceful surroundings of the temple.
