Nestled on a beautiful high bluff with sweeping views of the Mississippi River, the Nauvoo Illinois Temple is a true gem and a wonderful place to visit! As the 113th temple dedicated in operation, it not only serves as a spiritual home but also as a testament to the incredible dedication of its early builders.

The story of this beautiful temple began on April 4, 1999, when it was first announced to the public. Just a few months later, on October 24, 1999, President Gordon B. Hinckley led the groundbreaking and site dedication, marking the start of its construction. After years of hard work, the doors opened for a public open house from May 6 to June 22, 2002, welcoming an impressive 331,849 visitors! What an amazing opportunity for so many people to experience its beauty! The temple was officially dedicated later that month from June 27 to June 30, 2002, again by President Hinckley.

Set on 3.3 acres, the Nauvoo Illinois Temple spans 54,000 square feet and features a stunning exterior made of limestone blocks from Russellville, Alabama. One of the standout features is its elegant single attached end tower topped with a beautiful statue of the angel Moroni, which is a symbol of peace and hope. Inside, you’ll find four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to create a special and sacred space for worship and community gatherings.

With a height of 162 feet 5 inches and perched at an elevation of 650 feet, the temple truly stands tall! It’s a striking tribute to the original Nauvoo Temple built by early Church settlers in the 1840s. While that temple met a tragic end due to an arson fire in 1848 and intense winds in 1850, the new Nauvoo Illinois Temple beautifully captures its legacy and spirit.

As you stroll along the grounds, take a moment to appreciate the touching statue of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum Smith, who were martyred during a challenging time in history. The Nauvoo Illinois Temple is a message of perseverance, love, and faith—a welcoming place for all who come to visit, learn, and reflect. We hope you get the chance to experience its beauty and history for yourself!
