A Historical Journey
The Manti Utah Temple’s journey began on June 25, 1875, when it was announced to the public. Just two years later, on April 25, 1877, the temple was officially groundbreaking by none other than Prophet Brigham Young. The area, known as “Temple Hill,” rises majestically above the Sanpete Valley at an elevation of 5,657 feet, offering stunning views that enhance its spiritual significance.
Architectural Marvel
Covering 74,792 square feet and built from locally sourced fine-textured cream-colored oolite limestone, the Manti Temple is a stunning example of pioneer craftsmanship. The stone was quarried directly from the site, giving the temple a unique connection to its surroundings. With twin self-supporting, open-centered spiral staircases that wind up five stories in its twin octagonal towers, the Manti Utah Temple showcases extraordinary engineering. The seamless walnut handrailings reflect the mastery of the artisans of the era.
Interestingly, this temple does not display a gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue, which is commonly found atop many other temples. Instead, it stands as a testament to the simplicity and strength of faith without the addition of embellishments.
Unique Features and Renovations
Over the years, the Manti Utah Temple has undergone several renovations, resulting in public dedicatory events and open houses that showcase its beauty. The last open house took place from March 14 through April 5, 2024, preceding a much-anticipated rededication on April 21, 2024, led by Prophet Russell M. Nelson.
Among its many features, the temple boasts four instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Visitors are often enchanted by the beautiful painted murals in the Creation Room, Garden Room, and World Room, which narrate the divine story of creation in vivid colors. The Terrestrial and Celestial Rooms, however, are left bare, reflecting a reverent simplicity.
One of the temple’s most fascinating aspects is a large arching tunnel that once allowed vehicles to pass beneath the east tower. Though the tunnel is now closed, the arch remains visible as a reminder of the temple’s pioneering spirit.

While the Manti Utah Temple may not have a sign proclaiming its name, its presence is unmistakable. Dominating the landscape, it serves as a spiritual haven for thousands. Over the years, temple patrons have been enchanted not only by its impressive stature, which rises to 179 feet, but also by its atmosphere of peace and reverence.
Historically, this sacred space also featured a live endowment ceremony for an impressive 133 years—a tradition that continued until the recent renovations in 2021.
A Temple with Stories
There’s an intriguing story hidden in Manti’s past: in 1928, the east tower experienced a harrowing lightning strike that resulted in flames engulfing it for three hours. Thankfully, the temple was repaired and continued to serve the faithful in the region.
