In his closing remarks at the October 2021 General Conference, Russell M. Nelson announced that the Provo Utah Temple would undergo demolition and reconstruction, starting after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. The existing temple will close on February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work. Members are encouraged to use nearby temples during this transition and to make appointments for personal ordinances.

The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be located on Provo’s east bench at the mouth of Rock Canyon, with a backdrop of mountains. Its expansive grounds will feature a cascading water feature, surrounded by diverse flora. Nearby is the Provo Missionary Training Center, adding to the area’s spirit of dedication.

Spanning about 163,000 square feet on a 17-acre site, the new temple will include six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries, all designed to create an inviting atmosphere. The temple will be renamed to the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple on February 20, 2024, with demolition of the original structure occurring shortly after. Reconstruction is expected to finish by late 2027, showcasing a contemporary design with elegant arches and a multi-level tower that will culminate in a golden spire.

The new temple will comply with current seismic codes and incorporate energy-efficient systems, highlighting sustainability. Its design features three grand arches at the entrance, and unlike the previous temple, it will not have the Angel Moroni statue.

The 17-acre grounds will feature a blend of hardscaping and landscaping with native, drought-tolerant plants to support environmental stewardship. Water features and manicured garden terraces will create a serene atmosphere, enhancing the overall spiritual experience.
