LDS Temples in Utah

In his closing remarks during the Sunday Afternoon Session of the October 2021 General Conference, the late Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced that the Provo Utah Temple would undergo demolition and reconstruction after the dedication of the Orem Utah Temple. The existing temple will close on Saturday, February 24, 2024, ending its ordinance work. Members in the temple district are encouraged to use nearby temples during this transition.

The new Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be located at the mouth of Rock Canyon, offering stunning mountain views. The grounds will feature a cascading water feature surrounded by diverse landscaping, enhancing the spiritual ambiance. The proximity to the Provo Missionary Training Center adds to the area’s dedication.

Covering approximately 163,000 square feet on a 17-acre site, the temple design includes six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and two baptistries. The renaming to Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple on February 20, 2024, emphasizes its geographical significance. The original temple will close on February 24, 2024, and be demolished, with reconstruction expected to finish in late 2027.

The new design will blend traditional and contemporary elements, featuring elegant arched windows and a striking multi-level tower topped with a golden spire, moving away from the original mid-century modern style. The temple will meet current seismic codes and incorporate energy-efficient systems.

A distinctive feature of the design will be the three grand white arches at the main entrance, providing a welcoming feel. The exterior materials will adhere to modern standards. Unlike the previous temple, the new design will not include the Angel Moroni statue.

The extensive grounds will feature a mix of hardscaping and landscaping, focusing on native, drought-tolerant plants to support sustainability. Water features will further enhance the serene atmosphere, creating a peaceful retreat for visitors. The temple will also include manicured garden terraces and symmetrical walkways to establish a spiritual environment.

As the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple is built, it aims to be a sanctuary that embodies the area’s beauty and the values of its visitors, promising to be a cherished landmark and a source of peace for all.
