Nestled in the heart of Provo, Utah, the Provo City Center Temple stands as the 150th dedicated Temple in operation worldwide. Located at 50 South University Ave, this iconic site is not just a place of significance for its religious purpose but also a marvel of modern architecture and historical adaptation.
A Unique Historical Journey
The transformation of the Provo City Center Temple began with a tragic event in 2010, when an accidental fire rendered the original tabernacle unusable. Originally erected in the late 1800s, this building had served various religious functions, including hosting General Conference in both October 1886 and April 1897. Following the fire, significant renovations commenced, leading to the creation of what we see today.
On October 1, 2011, the building’s future as a Temple was announced by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the Semiannual General Conference. His words emphasized the importance of Temples as places where relationships are sealed for eternity, signifying the deep respect and value placed on these sacred places.
After the groundbreaking and site dedication on May 12, 2012, led by Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, the community watched as the transformation progressed over the next few years.
Architectural Features and Design
Completed and dedicated on March 20, 2016, by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks, the Provo City Center Temple showcases a blend of traditional and contemporary architectural elements. The exterior features red brick and an impressive central spire, surrounded by four corner spires topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni, which measures 13 feet tall and was placed on March 31, 2014.
Spanning a total size of 85,084 square feet and built to a height of 150 feet, the Temple’s design encompasses four levels—two above ground and two below. The upper levels include endowment rooms, sealing rooms, lobbies, and a chapel, creating an inviting environment for its various functions.
Meanwhile, the lower levels boast a baptistry, dressing rooms, offices, and a bridal room, ensuring that essential services are easily accessible. Additionally, a basement parking garage with 245 spots and 50 above-ground parking spaces makes it convenient for those attending events or meetings.
Community Engagement
The public open house from January 15 through March 5, 2016, drew over 800,000 eager individuals who toured the interior before its official dedication. This overwhelming interest highlights the Temple’s significance not only to the local area but also within the wider context of the faith.
Adjacent to the Temple stands a Victorian pavilion, equipped with a basement that connects to the Temple’s underground area enhancing the accessibility and flow between these key sites in Provo’s business district.
