Nestled in the heart of Lubbock, Texas, stands a beacon of hope and spirituality—the Lubbock Texas Temple, the 109th temple in operation. Its journey began with an announcement on April 2, 2000, sparking excitement and dreams among local members of the community. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on November 4, 2000, by Elder Rex D. Pinegar, marked a significant milestone. He beautifully captured the essence of this sacred space by expressing the feeling of “coming home,” a place where love and belonging flourish, and where the divine presence of our Father in Heaven can be felt.
The temple opened its doors to the public from March 23 to March 30, 2002, allowing visitors to explore its serene beauty before its dedication on April 21, 2002, by the beloved Prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley. Built on 2.7 acres, the Lubbock Texas Temple showcases an exterior of stunning Empress white and majestic gray granite, quarried from China—a sight that captures the awe of all who visit.
It features an elegant single spire crowned with a statue of Angel Moroni, inviting peace and reflection. Inside, the temple encompasses 16,498 square feet of sacred space, which includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, ready to facilitate countless sacred ordinances for families.
Elevated at 3,293 feet, the temple stands as a testament to faith and community. The first president of the temple, Jay B. Jensen, recalled the overwhelming joy and disbelief among local members when the announcement was made. Despite rainy weather during the groundbreaking, spirits soared as families envisioned the love and blessings this temple would bring.
Strolling around the Lubbock Texas Temple, visitors are greeted by rich symbolism found in the exquisite stained glass panes and the intricately etched granite walls, all telling a story of divine love and connection. This temple, co-located with the Lubbock Texas Stake Center on Frankford Avenue, is not just a building; it is a sanctuary where hearts gather, memories are made, and dreams of eternity are nurtured.
