Nestled in the heart of Lubbock, Texas, the Lubbock Texas Temple stands as a stunning testament to faith and community, being the 109th dedicated temple in operation. Its journey began with an announcement on April 2, 2000, igniting excitement and anticipation among local members. The groundbreaking ceremony, marked by reverence and hope, took place on November 4, 2000, led by Elder Rex D. Pinegar, who emphasized the temple as a symbol of a heavenly home, a place to feel the love and presence of our Father in Heaven.

After a brief wait, the temple opened its doors to the public for an open house from March 23 to March 30, 2002, allowing the community to finally experience its beauty. The official dedication occurred on April 21, 2002, conducted by the beloved Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, marking a pivotal moment for many. Built on 2.7 acres, this architectural marvel features a stunning exterior of Empress white and majestic gray granite quarried from China, harmonizing with the Texas landscape.

With a total floor area of 16,498 square feet, the temple is designed to accommodate spiritual needs with two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry. A prominent single spire crowned with an angel Moroni statue reaches towards the heavens, inviting those who pass by to pause and reflect.

Elder Pinegar’s words during the groundbreaking resonate with the local community: “This temple is the symbol of our heavenly home.” He beautifully articulated the feelings associated with returning home, drawing a parallel between earthly and heavenly families, and emphasizing the importance of service and work in both realms. The first president of the Lubbock Texas Temple, Jay B. Jensen, reflected on the emotional impact of the temple’s announcement, noting that for many local members, “it was like a dream… Their spirits were not dampened by the weather,” despite the rainy conditions that day.

Positioned alongside the Lubbock Texas Stake Center on Frankford Avenue in Southwest Lubbock, the temple invites all who stroll around its grounds to admire the rich symbolism in its beautifully crafted stained glass panes and the elegantly etched granite walls. Whether you’re a member of the community or a visitor, the Lubbock Texas Temple evokes a profound sense of belonging and peace, making it a cherished landmark for all.
