The Lubbock Texas Temple was announced to the public on April 2, 2000, during a General Conference by the Prophet. Just a few months later, on November 4, 2000, the groundbreaking and site dedication took place. Elder Rex D. Pinegar presided over the ceremony, emphasizing the sense of belonging and love inherent in the space. He remarked, “We have gathered here today to begin construction of a temple which is the symbol of our heavenly home.”
In preparation for its opening, a public open house occurred from March 23 to March 30, 2002, welcoming many to explore the interiors. The Temple was officially dedicated on April 21, 2002, by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who stated, “This is the house of the Lord, and He is here.”
Architectural Features
The Lubbock Texas Temple is built on a 2.7-acre site and encompasses 16,498 square feet. Its exterior finish features Empress white and majestic gray granite quarried in China, giving it an elegant and polished appearance. One of its most striking architectural features is a single attached end spire topped with a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue.
Interior Design
The Temple’s interior is a visual feast. Tall arched windows made of elegant stained glass incorporate symbolic rays of light, capturing the sunlight and enhancing the overall aesthetic. The walls are adorned with original oil paintings and watercolor-style prints, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the serene landscapes of West Texas. The groundbreaking for the Lubbock Temple occurred concurrently with that of the Monterrey Mexico Temple, and within a week of Lubbock’s dedication, the Monterrey Temple was also dedicated.
This Temple sits at an elevation of 3,293 feet and features a single story, making it uniquely accessible while retaining its grandeur. The rendering of the Temple was released in the late 2000s and has since inspired many through its beauty and purpose.
