A Brief History
The story of the Manti Utah Temple began with an announcement on June 25, 1875. Under the guidance of the Prophet Brigham Young, groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on April 25, 1877. This marked the beginnings of the third dedicated Temple in operation, and its significance has only grown over the years.
Architectural Features
The Manti Utah Temple spans an impressive 74,792 square feet and stands majestically at a height of 179 feet. Constructed from fine textured cream-colored oolite limestone, the materials were quarried right from the land that the Temple occupies. The craftsmanship is evident in details like the twin self-supporting, open-centered spiral staircases that wind five stories up the octagonal towers on the west side. Their walnut handrailings are an engineering marvel of the pioneer Latter-day Saints, with no visible joints to be found.
The Temple is home to four instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to facilitate the various activities held within its walls. Notably absent is a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue atop the towers, setting it apart from many other Temples.
An intriguing feature includes a large arching tunnel that once allowed cars to pass under the east tower. Though it has since been closed, the arch can still be glimpsed when exploring the sealing rooms.
