The journey towards the establishment of the Medford Oregon Temple began with a significant announcement on March 15, 1999, made by the Prophet during the General Conference. Just a couple of months later, on May 20, 1999, the groundbreaking and site dedication were carried out by D. Lee Tobler. This marked the beginning of an important chapter for the local area.

A public open house ran from March 24 to March 29, 2000, attracting approximately 46,000 attendees—16,000 more than initially anticipated. This impressive turnout highlighted the community’s interest in the new Temple. Ultimately, it was officially dedicated on April 16, 2000, by Apostle James E. Faust.

Architectural Features and Facilities

Covering an area of 10,700 square feet and sitting at an elevation of 1272 feet, the Medford Oregon Temple features a single-story design and is built on two acres of land. Its exterior finish consists of gray granite quarried from Mount Airy, North Carolina, which enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the building.

Unique Design Elements

A prominent feature of the Temple is the single attached end spire, crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, making it a striking sight against the skyline. The interior includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, providing essential spaces for various activities and services.

Historical Significance

The Medford Oregon Temple holds a special place in its locality as the first Temple built in Central Point, as well as the first in Jackson County. It is also the second Temple constructed in the state of Oregon, following the Portland Oregon Temple, which was completed in 1989.

In addition to its architectural and historical attributes, the general contractor and job superintendent for the construction were both members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, showcasing the dedication of local members throughout the building process.

Conclusion

The Medford Oregon Temple not only serves as a spiritual center but also stands as a testament to the dedication and faith of those involved in its creation. Its unique features, along with its historical context, continue to inspire and uplift those who are connected to this important site.
