The Medford Oregon Temple was first announced to the public on March 15, 1999, by the Prophet during a General Conference. The groundbreaking and site dedication happened shortly after, on May 20, 1999, led by D. Lee Tobler.

An open house event was held from March 24 to March 29, 2000, attracting an impressive 46,000 attendees, which was 16,000 more than anticipated. The Temple was officially dedicated on April 16, 2000, by Apostle James E. Faust.

Architectural Features and Design

With a footprint of 10,700 square feet, the Medford Oregon Temple sits on 2 acres of land at an elevation of 1,272 feet. It is designed as a single-story Temple and features a stunning exterior finish of gray granite, quarried from Mount Airy, North Carolina.

Unique Elements of the Design

  • Angel Moroni Statue: The Temple’s architectural highlight includes a single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
  • Functional Spaces: Inside, the Temple includes 2 instruction rooms, 2 sealing rooms, and 1 baptistry, designed to support various activities held within its walls.

Significance in the Region

This Temple holds the distinction of being the first one built in the city of Central Point and the first in Jackson County. It is the second Temple constructed in the state of Oregon, following the Portland Oregon Temple, which was completed in 1989.

Community Contributions

The general contractor and job superintendent for the Medford Oregon Temple were both members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, reflecting a strong connection between the local community and the Temple’s creation.

In summary, the Medford Oregon Temple is a significant addition to both the architectural landscape and the culture of Jackson County, highlighting the enduring values and dedication of its community members.
