Located at 827 Temple View Dr, this Temple is situated on the eastern edge of Las Vegas, far removed from the excitement of the famous Strip. The architecture features six soaring spires that rise gracefully, mirroring the striking red peaks of nearby Sunrise Mountain. The Las Vegas Nevada Temple was announced publicly on April 7, 1984, by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on November 30, 1985, led by then-Apostle Thomas S. Monson. After years of anticipation, a public open house took place from November 16 to December 9, 1989, drawing an impressive attendance of 297,480 individuals. The Temple was ultimately dedicated from December 16 to December 18, 1989, by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who stated, “This is a house of the Lord, and we dedicate it in His name.”
Architectural Features
Spanning 10.3 acres, the Las Vegas Nevada Temple is an architectural marvel. It boasts an exterior made of white precast stone and features a copper roof adorned with intricate detailing. The six attached spires are crowned with a statue of the angel Moroni, who faces east, symbolically heralding the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Within, the Temple occupies 80,350 square feet across three levels, with a total height of 137 feet at an elevation of 1,946 feet. The interior showcases exquisite art glass with geometric, Art Deco-inspired patterns that reflect the surrounding desert. A prominent desert-scape mural decorates the marriage waiting room, enhanced by striking stained-glass windows.
Interior Highlights
The interior features remarkable aspects such as custom light fixtures crafted by Preciosa. This includes brass and frosted-glass chandeliers that illuminate the interiors, especially the Celestial Room. This focal point presents two grand chandeliers, each standing 10 feet high and 8 feet wide, adorned with thousands of cut crystals. Natural light floods the Celestial Room through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, casting delightful miniature rainbows upon the walls.
Community Involvement
The Las Vegas Nevada Temple is notable not just for its beauty but also for the enthusiastic support from local members during its construction. Following the announcement, they contributed $11 million, which was 428 percent of the initial assessment requested.
The groundbreaking ceremony drew over 6,000 members, who gathered at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The event featured a special video presentation of Church leaders and dignitaries participating in the proceedings at the temple site that day.
Expanding Services
In 2012, a family history center opened within the grounds of the Temple, adding to its multifaceted purpose. This facility had previously served as a Distribution Services center, further enhancing its role in the lives of the local members.
As the first Temple constructed in Clark County and the state of Nevada, the Las Vegas Nevada Temple continues to be a significant spiritual center. Its dedication occurred just before the Christmas holiday, making it a fitting tribute to the Savior of the World.
