The history of the Oakland California Temple began with a vision in April 1928. Elder George Albert Smith experienced a profound moment of inspiration during a meeting in San Francisco. He articulated a vision of a “great white temple of the Lord” overlooking the East Bay hills, providing a powerful motivator for future generations.

The official announcement of the Oakland California Temple took place on January 23, 1961, and its ground breaking occurred on May 26, 1962, led by the Prophet David O. McKay. The Temple opened its doors for its first public open house from October 5 to October 31, 1964, offering a glimpse into its interior for the first time.

A second dedication by Prophet David O. McKay occurred from November 17 to November 19. Over the years, the Temple underwent further enhancements, culminating in a third public open house held from May 11 to June 1, 2019 and its subsequent rededication by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks on June 16, 2019.
