The journey of the Pocatello Idaho Temple began on April 2, 2017, when its announcement drew attention and excitement from the local and broader community. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on March 16, 2019, conducted by Elder Wilford W. Andersen. Notably, the public open house held from September 18th through October 23rd, 2021, saw an impressive turnout of 250,721 individuals.
The formal dedication occurred on November 7, 2021, led by Apostle M. Russell Ballard, who imparted blessings for prosperity and faithfulness to those who would visit and serve in this special place.
Architectural Features
The Pocatello Idaho Temple occupies a generous 10.94 acres, featuring a stunning exterior constructed from white granite sourced from China. This design includes a central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, an emblematic feature of many Temples. The facility spans 71,125 square feet and boasts three stories tall, reaching a height of 194 feet 6 inches.
Interior Highlights
Within the Temple, there are four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Notably, the chapel area showcases stained glass art depicting Jesus Christ holding a lamb. The grand staircase is elegantly clad in travertine limestone, adding to the interior’s beauty.
Nature and Surroundings
Surrounding the Pocatello Idaho Temple are over 500 trees and thousands of beautiful flowers. The landscaping features dominant species such as Norwegian sunset maple, sawleaf zelkova, and Dolgo crabapple. The selected shrubs, including English lavender and snow queen hydrangea, enhance the vibrant colors of the grounds. Moreover, white firs, alpine firs, and lodgepole pines grace the perimeter, chosen for their familiar presence in the nearby mountains.
Accessibility
Easily visible from both Interstate 15 and Interstate 86, the Temple serves as a notable feature in the landscape. It is the sixth Temple to be established in Idaho, fulfilling a long-held aspiration since the 1930s when plans for an earlier Temple were postponed due to water challenges.
