The Portland Oregon Temple was announced on April 7, 1984, marking the beginning of a vision that would come to fruition only a few years later. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on September 30, 1986, led by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Following years of anticipation, the Temple opened its doors to the public with an open house running from June 15 to July 8, 1989, attracting an impressive 314,232 individuals. The dedication itself occurred over three days, from August 19 to August 21, 1989, again presided over by Gordon B. Hinckley.
Architectural Features
Covering an area of 80,500 square feet, the Portland Oregon Temple is elegantly constructed on 7.3 acres of land. The exterior is adorned with white Vermont marble walls, complemented by a beautiful green Vermont slate roof. One of its most striking characteristics includes six attached spires and four domes, capped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni.
