The announcement of the San Antonio Texas Temple was made by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley on June 24, 2001, during a regional broadcast with church members in San Antonio. The groundbreaking for this notable site took place on March 29, 2003, officiated by H. Bruce Stucki.

Following significant construction efforts, a public open house occurred from April 16, 2005, to May 7, 2005, attracting a remarkable 69,679 attendees. This culminated in the Temple’s dedication on May 22, 2005. The dedication, performed by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, included a profound prayer in which he expressed a desire for blessings on the dedication and the space itself: “Wilt Thou, dear Father, accept of this our offering unto Thee…”

Architectural Features

The San Antonio Texas Temple covers 5.5 acres and features a single-story design. The exterior is adorned with granite, giving it a refined appearance. At 115 feet tall, it includes a striking end spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, which was placed on September 21, 2004, marking a historical moment coinciding with the 181st anniversary of Moroni’s first appearance to Joseph Smith.

Interior Design

The interior of the San Antonio Texas Temple is a true reflection of artistry and thoughtful detail. The light fixtures are predominantly made of brass, art glass, faux alabaster, and crystals, contributing to a luminous atmosphere. A grand chandelier, weighing 700 pounds, graces the celestial and waiting rooms along with intricate design elements throughout.

Murals and Art

Custom art pieces throughout the Temple feature a blend of southwestern aesthetics intertwined with religious themes. Highlights include original murals by Keith Bond located in the instruction rooms and paintings detailing the life of Jesus Christ.

The windows, particularly in the Celestial Room, portray the Tree of Life, representing the love of God and eternal life. Wheat motifs framed in intricate designs reflect Christ as the Bread of Life and symbolize the gathering of Israel.

Unique Materials and Design

The artistic design incorporates native materials, such as agate discovered during construction, fossilized red coral, and carbuncle. The custom railings around the baptismal font, crafted from wrought iron, echo the regional Spanish colonial architectural style. Notably, original glass pieces from the first Latter-day Saint chapel built in San Antonio are included, enhancing the Temple’s historical connection.

In summary, the San Antonio Texas Temple not only serves as a significant religious site but also stands as a testament to the creativity, dedication, and community spirit of those who contributed to its realization. Its architectural and artistic details make it a beautiful addition to San Antonio’s cultural landscape.
