The Meridian Idaho Temple was announced publicly on April 2, 2011, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the 181st General Conference. At that time, Meridian was the third largest and fastest-growing city in the state, having experienced a remarkable 115 percent population increase from 2000 to 2010. During this expansion, additional stakes were organized, reflecting the vibrant growth in faith and belief in the area.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 23, 2014, presided over by Apostle David A. Bednar. Local leaders such as Meridian Mayor Tammy deWeerd and Eagle Mayor James Reynolds were in attendance, signifying the importance of the occasion. Elder Bednar’s encouragement resonated with all present, as he expressed hopes that the Temple would serve as a beacon for the teachings of Jesus Christ.
A Transformative Experience
An open house was held from October 21 to November 11, 2017, allowing over 200,000 individuals to tour the facility before its dedication. The dedication occurred on November 19, 2017, led by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf, who emphasized the joy found in service within the Temple. His dedicatory prayer included a heartfelt plea for the Temple to be a place of reflection, peace, and divine presence.
Architectural Features
The Meridian Idaho Temple is elegantly situated on 15.73 acres and showcases notable architectural designs. With an exterior finish of precast concrete, the Temple features a central tower with an octagonal dome topped by a 13-foot-6-inch statue of the angel Moroni, installed on July 20, 2016.
Interior and External Design
Inside, the Temple spans 67,331 square feet across three stories. The interior showcases artistic elements, including leaded glass windows that feature geometric patterns inspired by blooming lilies. This design emphasizes growth and beauty, resonating with the local Idaho landscape. The Sapele African mahogany doors enhance the overall elegance, adorned with decorative metal hardware that reflects Idaho’s natural beauty.
The Celestial Room and other significant spaces are illuminated by multi-tiered crystal and bronze chandeliers, casting a warm glow throughout the environment. The interior lighting complements the various marble materials, contributing to the overall ambiance of tranquility and serenity.
Landscaping and Grounds
The exterior showcases beautifully arranged walkways, ponds, and trees, creating a serene atmosphere. The cupola cap, made from titanium, changes color based on sunlight angles, providing a stunning view.

A Dedicated Journey
The Meridian Idaho Temple is not only the first Temple in Meridian but also the second built in Ada County and the fifth in the state of Idaho. This Temple was uniquely the first announced by Church President Thomas S. Monson, marking a significant moment in local history.
Throughout its development, from the initial announcement to its dedication, the Meridian Idaho Temple has become an integral part of the region, reflecting a rich heritage of faith and devotion among those who gather.
The cultural celebration prior to the dedication featured nearly 6,000 youth from the surrounding area, highlighting the value placed on young people within the community. As President Uchtdorf noted during this celebration, the youth are a treasure, essential to the future of the area.
