The announcement for the Meridian Idaho Temple came on April 2, 2011, during the 181st General Conference by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. At that time, Meridian was the third largest and fastest-growing city in Idaho, with an impressive 115 percent increase in population from 2000 to 2010. In response to this growth, Meridian saw the organization of three additional stakes, along with four more in neighboring communities such as Nampa, Kuna, and Middleton.
The groundbreaking occurred on August 23, 2014, presided over by Apostle David A. Bednar. Esteemed community leaders, including Meridian and Eagle’s mayors, also attended this pivotal ceremony. Elder Bednar highlighted the significance of gratitude extending far beyond the day, suggesting that the Temple would serve as a guiding light of faith over the years.
Architecture and Design
The Meridian Idaho Temple spans a generous 15.73 acres and measures 67,331 square feet. With an elevation of 2,563 feet, its highest point reaches 120.2 feet. The architectural features comprise a single attached central tower and an octagonal dome, topped with a 13-foot-6-inch statue of the angel Moroni, which was lifted into place on July 20, 2016.
Interior and Exterior Features
The exterior finish is crafted from precast concrete, complemented by art glass inspired by geometric and Art Deco designs. The glass incorporates representations of blossoming lily-like flowers, symbolizing growth. The design embodies the local Idaho landscape, prominently featuring Idaho’s state flower, the syringa, not just in leaded glass but also as a recurring theme in paintings throughout the facility.
Inside, the Celestial Room and other areas boast stunning multi-tiered crystal and bronze chandeliers that provide a warm, inviting ambiance. Sapele African mahogany is used for the interior doors, adding durability and elegance. The baptistry’s railings feature geometric Prairie-style lines, encircling an octagonal font that draws on motifs of native Idaho flora.
Grounds and Landscaping
The well-maintained grounds include scenic walkways, serene ponds, and meticulously arranged trees and shrubbery. A unique aspect is the cupola cap, made from titanium, which changes color in response to sunlight, transitioning from blue-gray to gold to bronze.
Dedication and Community Celebration
The Meridian Idaho Temple officially opened its doors with a public open house from October 21 to November 11, 2017, attracting over 200,000 attendees. The dedication took place on November 19, 2017, led by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf, who emphasized the importance of the covenants made within its walls. During this event, he prayed for blessings upon all who would serve or participate in the Temple’s activities.
In a significant cultural moment, nearly 6,000 youth from the 16 stakes of the Meridian Idaho Temple district united for a musical celebration entitled “Be Strong, Steadfast, and Immovable” on November 18, 2017. President Uchtdorf remarked upon the immense potential of the youth, comparing them to treasures of faith in the area.
The Meridian Idaho Temple, the first dedicated in Meridian and the fifth overall in Idaho, stands as a testament to both the architectural elegance it presents and the spiritual significance it holds for the region. Its design and construction reflect not only local traditions and values but also a vision for the community’s future, nurturing faith for generations to come.
