Announced publicly on April 2, 2011, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson during the 181st General Conference, the Meridian Idaho Temple emerged amidst a time of rapid growth for the city of Meridian. With a 115 percent increase in population from 2000 to 2010, it became the third largest and fastest-growing city in Idaho. During this booming period, several additional stakes were organized within Meridian and surrounding communities like Nampa, Kuna, and Middleton.

The groundbreaking for this impressive Temple took place on August 23, 2014, led by Apostle David A. Bednar, who urged those present to extend their gratitude well beyond the dedication day. The Meridian Idaho Temple officially opened its doors with a public open house from October 21, 2017, through November 11, 2017, attracting over 200,000 attendees.

The Meridian Idaho Temple was dedicated on November 19, 2017, by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf, marking another significant milestone in the city’s history. His dedicatory prayer emphasized the importance of service, encouraging all who enter to find joy in their contributions.

Architectural Features

Spanning 67,331 square feet and reaching a height of 120.2 feet, the Meridian Idaho Temple showcases modern classical architecture that draws inspiration from early temples. Its exterior features a single attached central tower topped with a stunning 13-foot-6-inch statue of the angel Moroni, which was hoisted into place on July 20, 2016.

The Temple is adorned with precast concrete and geometric, Art Deco-inspired patterned exterior glass, with floral motifs that highlight Idaho’s natural beauty. Notable art pieces within the Temple prominently showcase the syringa flower, the state flower of Idaho, framed beautifully against the building’s sophisticated architecture.

Interior Design

Inside the Meridian Idaho Temple, exquisite attention to detail is visible in various elements like lighting and materials. The Celestial Room features stunning multi-tiered chandeliers that emit a warm, inviting glow, enhanced by the use of rich marbles and sapele wood. Interior doors made from African mahogany are elegantly designed with floral motifs that pay homage to local flora.

The baptistry area is characterized by geometric lines and includes a magnificent octagonal baptismal font, adorned with warm wood and decorative accents reflecting the area’s natural aesthetics.

Grounds and Location

Positioned on 15.73 acres, the Meridian Idaho Temple is further celebrated for its lush grounds, which include scenic walkways, ponds, and a range of trees and shrubbery that enhance its beauty. The titanium cupola atop the Temple changes colors with the sunlight, giving it a dynamic appearance throughout the day.

As the first Temple constructed in Meridian and the second in Ada County, it holds special significance for the area. It is also the fifth Temple built in Idaho, following the Idaho Falls Temple, Boise Temple, Rexburg Temple, and Twin Falls Temple.

With its blend of spiritual importance and striking design, the Meridian Idaho Temple represents a meaningful addition to the city of Meridian and serves as a reflection of the culture and faith of the people in this vibrant part of Idaho.
