Nestled on a beautiful high bluff with breathtaking views of the Mississippi River, the Nauvoo Illinois Temple is a truly special place filled with history and meaning. As the 113th temple in operation, it stands proudly as a symbol of faith for many.
The journey of this remarkable building began on April 4, 1999, when it was announced to the public. The excitement grew as the groundbreaking and site dedication took place on October 24, 1999, thanks to President Gordon B. Hinckley. After years of hard work, the community was invited to explore the temple during its open house from May 6 to June 22, 2002, where nearly 332,000 visitors came to admire its beauty! Finally, from June 27 to June 30, 2002, the temple was dedicated, marking a significant moment in its history.
Covering 3.3 acres and boasting a spacious 54,000 square feet, the temple is made of stunning limestone blocks quarried from Russellville, Alabama. Its elegant design features a charming single tower topped with a brilliant statue of the angel Moroni, welcoming all who come to visit. Inside, you’ll find four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all thoughtfully designed to serve the community.
Standing tall at 162 feet 5 inches and elevated at 650 feet above sea level, the Nauvoo Illinois Temple is an impressive sight. But what makes it truly special is that it faithfully recreates the original Nauvoo Temple, built by early Church settlers in the 1840s. That first temple faced unimaginable challenges, being destroyed by fire in 1848 and damaged by strong winds in 1850.
As you stroll around the beautiful grounds, you’ll also come across a lovely statue of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum Smith, who were pivotal figures in the Church’s history. Unfortunately, both were martyred during the construction of the original temple. Their legacy lives on, and the Nauvoo Illinois Temple stands as a heartwarming reminder of their faith and the perseverance of those who came before us.
