Nestled on a beautiful high bluff that overlooks a bend in the Mississippi River, the Nauvoo Illinois Temple is an enchanting place filled with history and meaning. As the 113th dedicated temple in operation, it’s a true gem worth visiting, offering both peaceful reflection and a glimpse into the past.
The story of this magnificent temple began back on April 4, 1999, when it was announced. Just a few months later, on October 24, 1999, the groundbreaking took place, led by President Gordon B. Hinckley, marking the start of an exciting journey. After years of careful planning and hard work, the temple opened its doors to the public for a special open house from May 6 to June 22, 2002, and it was a hit—drawing a whopping 331,849 visitors who came to admire its beauty! The official dedication followed later that month, from June 27 to June 30, 2002, and it was a moment of joy and celebration.
Spanning across 3.3 acres and boasting 54,000 square feet, the Nauvoo Illinois Temple is made from lovely limestone blocks sourced from Russellville, Alabama. Its charming single attached end tower is topped with a stunning statue of the angel Moroni, which adds to the temple’s special appeal. Inside, you’ll find four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to create a welcoming space for sacred ceremonies and gatherings.
Standing tall at 162 feet 5 inches, the temple truly shines against the backdrop of the sky at an elevation of 650 feet. It’s not just a beautiful structure but a heartfelt tribute to the original Nauvoo Temple, built by early Church settlers in the 1840s. Sadly, that first temple was destroyed by an arson fire in 1848, along with facing severe weather the following year.
Take a stroll around the temple grounds, and you’ll come across a touching statue depicting Joseph Smith, the Church’s founder, along with his brother Hyrum Smith on horseback. Their stories are woven into the fabric of this place, as they were both martyred in Carthage Jail during the construction of the original temple.
The Nauvoo Illinois Temple is more than just a building; it’s a heartfelt reconstruction of a cherished past and a symbol of hope, faith, and community. Whether you’re there for worship or simply to admire its beauty, you’ll leave feeling inspired and uplifted.
