Perched majestically on a high bluff, the Nauvoo Illinois Temple gazes down upon a picturesque bend in the Mississippi River, its stunning architecture drawing visitors from far and wide. This radiant temple, the 113th dedicated in operation, is more than just a building; it’s a symbol of faith, community, and resilience.

Located at 50 N Wells St, Nauvoo, Illinois, the temple’s story began when it was announced on April 4, 1999. The groundbreaking ceremony, led by Gordon B. Hinckley on October 24, 1999, marked the start of an ambitious journey to honor the original Nauvoo Temple, constructed by early Church settlers in the 1840s. After a dedicated period of construction, the public was welcomed into its grand open house from May 6 to June 22, 2002, where an impressive 331,849 visitors explored its sacred spaces.

Finally, the temple was dedicated over four momentous days, from June 27 to June 30, 2002, again with the blessings of President Hinckley. Spanning 54,000 square feet and reaching a height of 162 feet 5 inches, the temple is not only an architectural marvel but also a place of spiritual sanctuary. Its exterior, beautifully finished in limestone quarried from Russellville, Alabama, gleams against the backdrop of the Illinois sky.

Inside, the temple houses four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all designed to facilitate sacred ceremonies for the faithful. The striking single attached end tower, crowned with a gleaming angel Moroni statue, is not only visually captivating but serves as a beacon of hope and divine guidance for all who visit.

On the grounds, visitors can find a powerful statue depicting Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum on horseback—an homage to their legacy and martyrdom at Carthage Jail during the turbulent times surrounding the original temple’s construction.

The Nauvoo Illinois Temple stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the faith, inviting all who come to reflect, learn, and strengthen their beliefs in its serene embrace.
