The journey of the Oakland California Temple began with a visionary moment in April 1928. During a meeting at the Fairmont Hotel atop Nob Hill, Elder George Albert Smith envisioned a magnificent Temple situated on the East Bay hills. This vision was echoed by President David O. McKay, who oversaw the groundbreaking and dedication of the site on May 26, 1962.
The Temple was publicly unveiled for the first time during an open house from October 5 to 31 in 1964. Shortly after, it was dedicated for the first time from November 17 to 19, 1964. Over the years, the Temple underwent renovations, most notably a major rededication on June 16, 2019, by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks, following a third public open house that took place from May 11 to June 1, 2019.
