It all began in April 1928, when Elder George Albert Smith was meeting at the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill. During that meeting, he had a moving vision of a majestic white temple sitting on the East Bay hills, serving as a welcoming beacon for travelers entering the bay. His enthusiastic declaration about the future temple filled everyone in the room with excitement and possibility.
Fast forward to January 23, 1961—an important day when the official announcement of the Oakland California Temple was made! The excitement was palpable in the community. On May 26, 1962, the groundbreaking ceremony hosted by President David O. McKay brought dreams closer to reality. Just two years later, from October 5 to 31, 1964, the temple opened its doors for a public open house, giving everyone a chance to experience its beauty and environment before it was officially dedicated.
The first dedication took place from November 17 to 19, 1964, led by President McKay, marking a momentous occasion for the Church community. It created a spiritual home for countless families eager to participate in cherished traditions. Fast forward once again to June 16, 2019—the temple was rededicated by President Dallin H. Oaks after some amazing renovations that made this beautiful temple even better!
Covering 18.1 acres, the Oakland California Temple is quite spacious, providing 80,157 square feet of tranquility and sacred space. Towering at 170 feet high, its beautiful design includes a central spire with four smaller spires. The exterior shines beautifully with Sierra white granite from Raymond, California, creating a lovely sight against the hillside.
Once you step inside, you’ll find a serene atmosphere. The temple features four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, making it an inviting place for many spiritual ceremonies and celebrations. One of the cool things about this temple is that it was the first one in the U.S. designed to include film presentations in the instruction rooms, making it a unique experience for visitors.
