Discovering the Oakland California Temple

The Oakland California Temple is an extraordinary site located at 4770 Lincoln Ave, Oakland, California 94602. This remarkable edifice has a rich history and offers a fascinating glimpse into its significance and architectural beauty.

Oakland California Temple

The Oakland California Temple was first announced on January 23, 1961. The ground was broken on May 26, 1962, with a site dedication led by Prophet David O. McKay. The excitement surrounding the Temple was palpable, culminating in its first Public Open House held from October 5 to 31, 1964. This was followed by the second dedication from November 17 to 19, also conducted by Prophet McKay.

Fast forward to May 11 through June 1, 2019, when the Temple was opened again for a third public house. A rededication occurred shortly after on June 16, 2019, led by Prophet Dallin H. Oaks.

Architectural Features

Nestled on 18.1 acres of land, the Oakland California Temple covers an impressive 80,157 square feet and reaches a height of 170 feet, sitting at an elevation of 664 feet. The exterior features reinforced concrete with Sierra white granite sourced from Raymond, California, exuding elegance and durability. The architectural design includes a central spire along with four smaller spires, creating a visually striking silhouette against the skyline.

A Vision Realized

The inspiration for the Temple can be traced back to April 1928 when Elder George Albert Smith experienced a vision during a meeting with the San Francisco stake president. His vivid description included a glorious white Temple set against the East Bay hills, which can now be seen overlooking the San Francisco Bay Area.

Unique Features

Inside, the Oakland California Temple houses four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, serving various spiritual purposes. Notably, it was the first Temple in the USA designed for film presentations in its instruction rooms. Additionally, two 35-foot sculpted panels depicting Jesus Christ teaching add to the aesthetic and narrative richness of the space.

Natural Elements

The Temple grounds feature cascading waterfalls and a creek-style water feature, enhancing the serene atmosphere of the area.

Spiritual Significance

Brigham Young once prophesied that “in process of time the shores of the Pacific may be overlooked from the Temple of the Lord.” The Oakland California Temple stands as a fulfillment of that visionary statement, acting as a serene marker of faith for individuals who appreciate its unique history and architectural significance.

No matter how one approaches the Oakland California Temple, its beauty and profound importance are clearly evident, inviting a closer look at this remarkable place in California’s landscape.
