The Ogden Utah Temple is a beautiful gem and proudly stands as the 14th dedicated temple in operation. Its journey began on August 24, 1967, when it was announced with much excitement in the community. Just a couple of years later, on September 8, 1969, Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer dedicated the site, and Hugh B. Brown marked the groundbreaking—what a special day!
After some eager anticipation, the temple opened its doors for the very first public open house from December 16-30, 1971. Can you believe that around 181,000 guests came to explore its stunning beauty and spiritual atmosphere? That’s quite a turnout! The official dedication took place a little later, from January 18-20, 1972, under the guidance of Joseph Fielding Smith, solidifying the temple’s importance to all who cherish it.
Fast forward to more recent times, the Ogden Utah Temple welcomed visitors for a second open house from August 1 through September 6, 2014, and then it was rededicated on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. It’s clear that this temple continues to play a vital role in the community!
Nestled on 9.96 acres right in downtown Ogden, the temple’s exterior is adorned with beautiful granite that was quarried and crafted in China. Its striking design features a single central spire topped with a golden angel Moroni statue, making it an eye-catching sight! Inside, visitors can find six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry—all within a spacious 112,232 square feet, creating a warm and inviting sanctuary for everyone.
Standing at an impressive height of 188 feet and 8 inches and resting at an elevation of 4,299 feet, the temple enhances the landscape with lovely water features, vibrant trees, and meticulously tended grounds. It’s a wonderful place to take a stroll!
Adding to its charm, the Ogden Utah Temple is the fifth to be built in Utah and was the very first dedicated in the state—remarkably 80 years after the previous four were consecrated while Utah was still a territory. One heartwarming moment during its dedication occurred when Prophet Harold B. Lee stepped in to finish the dedicatory prayer after Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith grew too weak. It’s a lovely reminder of the spirit of community and support.
