The Ogden Utah Temple is a significant landmark as the 14th dedicated temple in operation for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its journey began on August 24, 1967, when it was officially announced, generating enthusiasm within the community. The initial site dedication took place on September 8, 1969, led by Joseph Fielding Smith and Alvin R. Dyer, coinciding with the groundbreaking ceremony on the same day, conducted by Hugh B. Brown.
The temple opened for its first public open house from December 16 to December 30, 1971, where it attracted around 181,000 visitors, eager to explore its spiritual significance and architectural beauty. Following this, the temple was officially dedicated from January 18 to 20, 1972, by Joseph Fielding Smith, establishing its presence as a sacred place of worship and reflection.
In 2014, the temple underwent renovations and held a second open house from August 1 to September 6. It was rededicated on September 21, 2014, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, affirming its importance in the area.
The temple is situated on 9.96 acres in downtown Ogden and features an exterior finished with granite quarried and fabricated in China. Architecturally, it is defined by its single central spire, topped with a distinctive gold-leafed angel Moroni statue. Inside, there are six instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and one baptistry, all housed within a spacious area of 112,232 square feet.
Standing at an impressive height of 188 feet and 8 inches, the temple is located at an elevation of 4,299 feet, enhancing its visibility and contributing to the local skyline. The grounds are designed with beautiful landscaping, featuring two large water features, a variety of trees, and well-maintained gardens that enhance the tranquil atmosphere.
Historically, the Ogden Utah Temple holds the distinction of being the fifth temple built in Utah and the first dedicated in the state 80 years after the previous four were consecrated while Utah was still a territory. A noteworthy moment during its dedication occurred when Prophet Harold B. Lee completed the dedicatory prayer after Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith became too weak to continue.
